Study: 30% of Top AI Chatbots Track Users
Some AI bots collect not just messages but also contact lists and sensitive data, with part of it potentially shared with third parties, often without users' awareness.

Surfshark analyzed the privacy policies of the 10 most popular AI chatbots in the Apple App Store. The study revealed that all apps collect user data — an average of 11 types out of a possible 35.
30% of them track user data. This means the apps transmit or link the data with other sources — most often for targeted advertising. Copilot, Poe, and Jasper fall into this category.
Google Gemini collects the most data — 22 types. These include: precise location, contacts, search and browsing history, chat content, and other sensitive categories. Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity are the only ones that access geolocation.
ChatGPT collects 10 types of data, including contact information and chat history. However, it does not track users or use third-party ads. Data can be deleted manually or through temporary chats that are automatically cleared after 30 days.
Chinese DeepSeek ranked in the middle of the list, but it was the one involved in a data leak. According to The Hacker News, over a million records, including API keys and chat histories, were compromised.
