On May 5, 2025, Microsoft will officially retire Skype. All users received notifications with instructions on how to transfer accounts and contacts to Microsoft Teams or archive their message history.

According to Microsoft, Teams supports all the same features as Skype — messaging, voice and video calls — and offers additional capabilities like video conferencing, calendar scheduling, and online communities. “Teams is better suited for work, not just personal chat,” the company emphasized.

Skype for Business will remain operational, but access to the standard Skype app will be discontinued for all other users, including those with active subscriptions. Subscriptions were automatically renewed until April 3, 2025. After that, users can make calls only via the Skype web portal or through Teams.

Sales of paid features such as Skype Credit and international call subscriptions have already been halted. Users who wish to transfer their Skype phone number are advised to contact a new telecom provider.
