Sora for Android

OpenAI has released its video creation app, Sora, for Android. The app is now available in the US, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Previously only available on iOS, Sora gained over one million downloads within five days of its launch in late September.

Sora is more than a video generator — it's a social app with a TikTok-like feed where users can watch, share, and remix AI-generated videos. It allows people to insert themselves or their friends into videos using the “cameo” feature. According to OpenAI, Sora produces “hyperreal videos with unprecedented realism.”

Recent updates added reusable character avatars, with plans to allow rightsholders to monetize cameos of well-known characters and public figures. The app lets users choose visual styles — from cinematic to cartoonish — and modify other people’s content by swapping characters, adding scenes, or changing the mood.

The Android release removes the waitlist in supported countries, opening the doors to wider access. Still, user feedback has been mixed. Some note regional restrictions and registration issues, while others express concern about the unsettling realism of certain videos. As one user commented: “I tried Sora and uninstalled it moments later. It’s insight into what people are thinking in a way that I found incredibly disturbing.”
