GitHub Copilot adds 5 million new users in just three months
GitHub Copilot hits a new milestone — 20 million users. But the race with Cursor and others is just beginning. As enterprise adoption rises, so does competition in the AI coding space.

GitHub Copilot has surpassed 20 million users. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared the milestone during the company’s latest earnings call. A GitHub spokesperson confirmed that the figure includes all-time users who have ever tried the tool.
Five million people started using Copilot in the past three months alone. Back in April, GitHub reported 15 million users. Microsoft hasn’t disclosed how many are active monthly users, but that number is likely much lower.
Copilot is now used by 90% of Fortune 100 companies. Demand from enterprise clients grew by 75% compared to the previous quarter.
Copilot is already a bigger business than all of GitHub was when we acquired it in 2018.

As Copilot grows, its competitors are moving fast. Cursor, another popular coding tool, has reportedly passed $500 million in annual recurring revenue. Both GitHub and Cursor are building autonomous agents to detect bugs and automate tasks, aiming to expand beyond just assistance.
Other major players are entering the field. Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Cognition are all developing their own AI coding platforms. The market for AI tools for developers is becoming one of the most competitive spaces in tech.
