OpenAI has introduced a new family of models — GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and GPT-4.1 nano — designed specifically for developers and available exclusively via API. According to the company, these models outperform GPT-4o in all key areas, including instruction following, long-context handling, and structured output generation.

GPT-4.1 was built with developer feedback in mind, with a focus on consistent output formatting, UI handling, code generation, and prompt adherence. In its announcement on X, OpenAI referred to it as a response to the “supermassive black hole” of developer needs.

The models offer lower latency with increased throughput and support up to 1 million tokens of context — 5x more than GPT-4o and nearly 8x more than GPT-4.5. GPT-4.1 is also 26% cheaper than GPT-4o, while the mini version costs 83% less.

Alongside the launch, OpenAI announced that GPT-4.5 Preview will be discontinued on July 14, 2025.
